

The basic spell points system the OP is referring to allows a caster to reproduce exactly the spell slots that they would have under the standard rules of the game. The combined spell points + sorcery points pool equals more spells of every level for a sorcerer to cast and more metamagic available. But the real value of first level spell slots isn't to do damage.
